Beginner Longsword Series

Our Beginner Longsword Series is an intro to Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) through longsword fencing. The series will be held four times each year. No experience or equipment is required to participate. This series is a set of four classes and is a safe, welcoming, and inclusive opportunity to play with swords, and learn the actual techniques of fighting with swords from medieval Europe. Classes are held on four consecutive Saturdays from 11:30 am to 1:30pm.

Students will be exposed to fundamental fencing concepts, techniques, and nomenclature through the perspective of the Liechtenauer tradition. The goals are to develop a foundation of knowledge and skill and to prepare students for joining our broader collection of classes and practices, if students decide they want to further their study.

Students should bring a water bottle and wear attire appropriate for exercise. The classes are structured such that students do not need to wear fencing gear, but if you have gear please bring it.

We will supply training swords, with which students will strike coaches.

Progression beyond this class does require students to have their own equipment, specifically mask, gloves, and gorget. We will explain equipment and provide ample opportunities for students to try on gear for sizing, information about distributors, or the option to purchase from us at cost.
